Class on Tuesday September 9

I already wrote notes on the drawing itself, but this was basically a negative space drawing of a bicycle upside down as a first exercise for the day.



With Stoel we drew the skylines from the window of our studio, the top most one and then the lower one of the street below and with the next rotation we took all the drawing tools we had in our possession and attempted to draw a straight line across the page to see the result of them. Some were straighter then others...

Leaf Project

Our first real studio project as Interior Architecture majors, design a place for a Leaf. Here are a couple of sketches:

These were my first couple of ideas and concepts when we were given the project, we were told to do Sketch Models and I mis-interprited that request by only doing sketches when a Sketch model is basically a 3D rough model of your ideas. I will remember that in the future.

Here are the first couple models I did starting from the left bulky pentagonal prism shape, to the thinner version of the first, and then to the cylindrical woven structure. My idea for the first two was to mimic the shape of the Ivy leaf and the form was to represent a stable structure going along with strength and stability that symbolizes the Ivy leaf I had picked. Then came the woven form because I wanted something more intricate and less bulky, still shows strength of the Ivy but then lost its shape reference and I didn't know what to do with the curly top pieces but the structure didn't look right with the tendrils cut completely off.

These next couple of models were my next couple of tries at making my idea of stability and the characteristics of the leaf, I stayed with the weaving idea to convey strength but also tried different shapes. Now the only problem seemed to be the scale of the place verses the leaf itself that was for the place. And of course I also needed to think about color too.

And here is the final product of "a place for a leaf", I chose to use similar colors to embody leaf, dark and light to contrast the colors of the leaf and it's veins, and the tendrils at the bottom because the structure looked odd without them.

Past Week's Assignments

We were assigned to draw five messes by Suzanne, I posted only three because I like these the best out of the five.

From Stoel we were to take quotes from a piece of printer paper and write them out in the lettering style he had been teaching us to use. It was all supposed to fit on one page but mine didn't fit the last quote. I found out today that I actually didn't need to put a letter for each space, but rather just use the horizontal lines as guidelines in this assignment.


And for our last assignment we were to draw our final leaf project.

Class on Thursday September 04

Beginning of class we met in the upper critique room and there was a lone chair on the platform, I thought we were going to do figure drawing of some sort, which is one of my most favorite things to do, but it turned out we were assigned to draw the negative space around the chair not the chair itself. We had to spend the entire time drawing so rather then draw more angles of the negative space for the chair I began to draw the people in the background.


In our rotations we did a variaty if things, in our first group we drew our rooms past and present from memory and then future. The future one was probably the hardest one for me because I had never really given any thought to what my room would look like in the future. I would hope it was spacious and had a big window in it, with good scenery would also be a plus. In the second group we continued contor drawings, but this time of people. In my case, my friends Hailey and Christy, had to be drawn without looking at the paper. I think I did the best on Hailey (Despite making her look like an old lady.) so I posted that picture. And in the last group we had to describe an object to people and they had to attempt to draw exactly what you were looking at without seeing the object themselves. Easier said then done!


Just more contor drawings as a group in the critique room before the end of class, I'm ok with doing contor drawings but its not my favorite thing in the world. But if it will help me in my drawing then it must be worth it.

Class on Tuesday September 2

In the beginning of class we started our usual warm up drawing exercise, we drew our neighbor's shoe/foot and now we where to draw our own hand. I was pretty pleased with the way mine turned out, it actually looked like a hand rather then a claw of some animal. (Ignore the writing to the side, I also wrote my homework on this page meaning to erase it before I scanned it.)


After Warm-up sketches of the hand we moved into three groups that rotated between the three instructors of our classes. Suzanne's we did contor hand drawings where we had to sketch on a large sheet of paper our own hand without looking at the paper, Stoel's we drew 1 minute and 5 minute sketches of the front and top view of what we remembered our current model looked like, and in the last rotation of class we were given an object and we could only draw it by touch, we were not aloud to look at the object to get an idea of what we where drawing.

Lettering...

I had this coupled with the previous post, but it turns out we are supposed to post it separatly. Lettering exercise done for class so we can make work or a presentation more presentable. Good thing too because my handwriting is atrocious.

5 Things...

For this activity we had to take out five things from our purse or backpack to draw. Most of mine ended up being electronics of some sort. I drew my digital camera, my ipod, my cellphone, my wallet, and a pack of Orbit Gum (Spearmint). I was going to draw them all in one picture as a collage, but then I just decided to draw each item one at a time so I could focus on each item's details.

I may also draw my purse, just to add alittle extra. :)
